Welcome to the Family Communion Guide, meant to help you experience the power and love of Jesus at the table of remembrance!
Please review the information below as you and your household rely upon the Spirit of God to reveal the Lord's Supper in a fresh and powerful way. Communion is a very special and holy observance to the Lord. However, do not feel pressured to cover all the information below. It's meant to guide, equip, encourage, and help you understand the meaning of communion as well as to enter into God's Word while celebrating communion.
We encourage everyone in your group to play a role. Allow the children to read scripture, someone else to serve the elements, someone else pray, etc.

“And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.” (Luke 22:19–20, NKJV
Communion is a symbolic way to show we belong to Jesus and to remember what He did for us. It’s a command of the Lord Jesus Christ to remember and celebrate the Lord's sacrificial suffering and death upon the cross. The breaking and eating of bread are symbols of Christ's body being broken on the cross. The drinking from the cup has to do with the shedding of Jesus Christ's blood which provides the forgiveness of our sin. (See Matthew 26:26-28; 1 Corinthians 11:23-24)
When the nation of Israel was in bondage to the Egyptians, God sent a tenth and final plague. Israel was protected from the death of the first-born by faith and obedience in applying the blood of the lamb to their door posts and lentil. When the death angel saw the blood, it "passed over" their homes. (See Exodus 12)
The Lord's Supper, also known as "communion", is the celebration of the remembrance of this "passover". (See Matthew 26) The amazing thing is that Jesus delivered us from the house of satanic bondage because of sin. Now, we are able to apply the body and blood of Jesus' sacrifice and we are forgiven of our sins, born again, and made sons and daughters of the King!
“For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:23–26, NKJV)
“Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.” (Luke 24:30–35, NKJV)
It’s about being reminded of what Jesus did for us on the cross and it’s a time to celebrate how He has saved us. When you observe communion, the bread and juice symbolize what Jesus did for us. The bread is a symbol of His body that was broken for us. The juice symbolizes His blood that was spilled to pay for our sins.
“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” (Ephesians 4:1–6, NKJV)
Paul the apostle reminds us that Communion is an outward expression of the "common union" believers have as the Body of Christ. (See 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 and 12)
Communion is for people who have put their trust in Jesus. So, you shouldn’t take communion if you haven’t come to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He suffered, died, was buried, and that the Father raise Him from the dead on the third day. (See Romans 10:9-13) There is a judgment of God that is released when not properly discerning the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:27-32).
We believe that children should be allowed to participate in communion when the parents feel they have a basic understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and have received Jesus into their hearts through faith. Communion is a powerful opportunity to strengthen a child's understanding of the promise of God through Jesus and their decision to follow the way of Christ as well as the way of the cross.
We believe the scriptures are clear that all those who are washed by the blood of Jesus Christ through faith are able to handle and administer Communion. The believers in Christ are a royal priesthood in the New Testament. (See 1 Peter 2:4-5)
In traditional Catholic theology, there is a belief that the bread and wine actually become changed into the actual body and blood of Christ. This is known and transubstantiation. Nowhere in scripture is such a doctrine supported. In fact, Jesus Himself says that the words He spoke concerning His body and blood were of spirit because the flesh profits nothing.
(See John 6:48-65). Thus, the bread and wine (juice) are simply symbols that remind us of the love covenant of God through Jesus' sacrificial death. The bread symbolized the broken body of Jesus and the wine, or juice, symbolize Jesus' shed blood.
Crackers or bread. It is recommended to purchase Matza, or unleavened bread from the supermarket.
When it comes time for the Communion service, have small cups or glasses and pour the juice into them (enough for each person in your family or group). Break the bread or crackers apart into smaller pieces so there is enough for everyone.
Be led of the Holy Spirit to thank God and ask for the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Worship can take many forms. The following are a few ideas to incorporate.
The singing of worship songs.
Going around the room and allowing people to personally give thanks to God.
The sharing of scripture.
Take the time to read the Bible together. If there are small children it may be good to also include a time to tell the story of Jesus and what He did upon the cross. Allow different people to slowly read the scriptures out loud. Include friends, family, and the children! Here are a few scriptures to select from:

Time should be left for quiet, personal reflection to examine our relationship with the Lord, repent of sins, and to meditation upon the scripture.
Be sure to encourage people to think about the wonderful promise of God through Jesus Christ and how our sins are forgiven because of Jesus's suffering, death, burial, and resurrection!
Think about leaving time for people to share what the Holy Spirit places upon their hearts. This is a wonderful time to share and support another.
Foster an environment where people are safe and comfortable to share.

Pass the bread and read 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 and partake of the symbol of Jesus' broken body.
Pass the juice around and read 1 Corinthians 11:25-26 and partake of the symbol of Jesus' blood shed for the forgiveness of sins.
Ask God to help your family or the group you are with to always remember God's great love! Be led of the Holy Spirit to include any other prayer requests!

And he said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 But they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!” 16 Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away. 17 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center. 19 Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. 17 “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I build again those things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. 2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. 3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?” 5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. 6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,” 9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.” 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?” 12 Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. 13 And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. 14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. 15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. 16 But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. 17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.” 18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. 19 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. 20 Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. 21 Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.” 22 And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?” 24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not!” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” 27 Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed. 28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. 29 Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?” 30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.” 31 Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,” 32 that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die. 33 Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” 37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all.” 39 “But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?” 40 Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.
